How to Choose the Right Volleyball Club Program for Your Athlete

Choosing a volleyball club is a decision about your athlete’s next season: where they will practice, who will coach them, how much they will travel, and what they hope to learn. A good place to start is a conversation with your athlete about what they want from the experience.

Use the questions below to compare programs and find an environment that fits your athlete’s goals, current development, and family schedule.

Start with your athlete’s goals

Ask what they are excited to work on. Are they learning the fundamentals, looking for more match experience, preparing for school tryouts, or seeking a more demanding competitive environment?

Try to name two or three specific goals. “I want to pass more consistently” or “I want to understand my role during a rally” gives a coach more to work with than simply wanting to join the highest-level team. Include the athlete in this conversation so the commitment reflects their interests.

Separate age eligibility from skill level

Age eligibility determines which division an athlete can enter. Skill level helps guide the training environment and team placement that may suit them. Two players of the same age can have very different amounts of experience.

Confirm the current season’s age requirements with the club before registering for tryouts. Avoid choosing a division based only on a grade label or assuming that an older group automatically offers a better experience.

For the development conversation, ask a coach to look at serving, passing, movement, communication, and comfort during rallies. These are useful discussion points, not a universal checklist an athlete must pass before exploring club volleyball.

Look beyond the team label

O3 Volleyball offers national, regional, and state-level club programs. When comparing options, ask what each team’s actual season includes. A label alone does not tell you the practice schedule, tournament calendar, travel expectations, or roster needs.

Ask how the program would support your athlete’s goals and what the coach would expect from them. A clear explanation of the training and competition plan is more useful than choosing by name alone.

Understand the full commitment

Review practice locations and times, season length, tournament weekends, and likely overnight travel. Put those dates alongside school activities and other family commitments.

Request a complete cost breakdown. Ask what is included in club fees and what families pay separately, such as uniforms, tournament travel, hotels, or memberships. Review payment deadlines and cancellation terms before accepting a place.

Ask about coaching, roles, and communication

A tryout or clinic can help your athlete experience the gym environment. Notice how coaches explain a skill, respond to mistakes, and communicate expectations. Encourage your athlete to ask questions, too.

Before committing, ask:

  • How many athletes will be on the roster, and which positions are being evaluated?
  • How do coaches give feedback and discuss development during the season?
  • What is the playing-time philosophy, and how are player roles communicated?
  • Who should athletes and parents contact when a question or concern comes up?
  • What conduct and athlete-safety policies does the club follow?

Make sure the answers are clear to both you and your athlete. Expectations about match opportunities, attendance, and communication are easier to discuss before the season begins.
